A bowl of delicious Granola

Homemade Granola Recipe

Homemade granola is a delicious and customizable breakfast or snack option. Granola gained widespread popularity during the counterculture movement of the 1960s and 1970s. It was associated with the back-to-nature and hippie lifestyle.

Origin of Granola:

The concept of granola can be traced back to the 19th century when health reformers and nutrition advocates began promoting a diet based on whole grains and natural foods. Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, a physician and health enthusiast, developed a cereal called "granola" around 1880. It was made from rolled oats, wheat, and cornmeal.

Here's a basic recipe for homemade granola that you can adjust to your taste by adding your favorite nuts, seeds, dried fruits, or spices:

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups rolled oats (old-fashioned oats)
  • 1 cup nuts (e.g., almonds, walnuts, pecans), chopped
  • 1/2 cup seeds (e.g., pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds)
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened shredded coconut
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup liquid sweetener (e.g., honey, maple syrup, agave nectar)
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil or vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • 1/2 cup dried fruits (e.g., raisins, cranberries, apricots), chopped (optional)

How To Make Granola

  1. Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the rolled oats, chopped nuts, seeds, shredded coconut, ground cinnamon (if using), and salt. Mix well to evenly distribute the ingredients.
  3. In a small saucepan, heat the liquid sweetener (e.g., honey, maple syrup, agave nectar) and coconut oil over low heat. Stir until the mixture is well combined and the coconut oil has melted. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract, if using.
  4. Pour the sweetened mixture over the dry ingredients in the mixing bowl. Stir thoroughly, ensuring that all the dry ingredients are coated with the sweetener mixture.
  5. Spread the granola mixture evenly onto the prepared baking sheet.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for about 30-35 minutes, or until the granola turns golden brown, stirring every 10 minutes for even cooking.
  7. Remove the granola from the oven and let it cool completely on the baking sheet. It will become crisp as it cools.
  8. Once the granola is cool, you can mix in your choice of dried fruits, if desired.
  9. Transfer the homemade granola to an airtight container or a resealable bag for storage. It can be kept at room temperature for several weeks.

Enjoy your homemade granola with milk or yogurt for breakfast, or snack on it straight from the container. You can also get creative by adding it to smoothie bowls, parfaits, or using it as a topping for desserts.
